Moving is the perfect time to sort through all of your stuff and decide what you need, and what you don’t need. There’s a good chance you have a lot of items you don’t need, but are still in good shape, so there’s no point in tossing them!
The hardest part of getting rid of items is figuring out what to do with them – do you throw them out?, donate them?, keep them in storage? We highly recommend donating any items that are still in good shape, just because you can’t make use of them doesn’t mean someone else can’t. Donating is easy and takes the stress off your move. How? Call a local donation center and chances are they will pick up your donation items for FREE. Then you don’t have to create a Craigslist ad, or pay to either move the items or dump them. Typically, companies charge movers hourly and/or by the pound, which can get expensive quickly!
We’ve put together a few ideas on how and where to donate your used items, i.e. clothes, books, furniture, etc.
1. Excess Access: Do you have any items you no longer want that someone else probably would want? If so, contact Excess Access, they’ll do the paperwork for you and set you up with someone that would like to take the items of your hands.
2. Charity Choices: Visit this site for a list of all of the donation locations in DC.
3. Donation Town: Want your donations picked up? No problem, Donation Town will pick up your donations free of charge and give you a tax deduction receipt.
4. 123 Junk: This organization picks up your unwanted items and either donates, recycles or disposes of them.
TIP: If the donation items are still at your home when we arrive to do the move (but we aren’t moving the charity stuff) it’s best for you to label the donation items, so our movers can quickly identify what not to take. It’s also key to keep all of the stuff in one place. If our movers are dancing around the stuff or constantly having to clarify what stays, and what goes, it’s going to cost you money. Remember movers are on the clock and time is money!
Not to worry though, if you don’t have the time, or just don’t feel like dealing with the donation/ pick up process, we’re happy to help you out! We can either bring items to the dump for you (which could just be the dumpster at your apartment complex, a quick trick!), or bring them to a donation location. If we’re bringing items to a donation location just make sure it’s all in the same place, this will make for easy truck loading.
