Moving to a new state is an exciting adventure in life; however, it can be a frantic time because of the logistical challenges. It’s important to take the time to plan your move step-by-step so you’ll be able to easily take care of everything from deciding what to take with you to tasks you should complete when you arrive at your new home.

Before you break out the boxes and shipping tape, consider these tips to simplify your moving process.

Make a budget and start saving!

Shipping, movers, hotels, gas, and insurance costs can pile up quickly. A long distance move requires a few upfront expenses that could drain your bank account. Making a budget and savings plan to cover the costs will help make for a smooth transition and ensure you have a solid plan and money upfront when it comes time to move. To keep track of both your budget and your expenses, create a master spreadsheet of all of your moving-related costs so you’ll be prepared to make the payments when you need to. You can also use a cost of living calculator to determine how far your current salary will take you in specific cities across the country.

Decide what to bring.

Moving furniture from one state to another can rack up your moving costs exponentially. Movers charge by the pound so every pound counts.  Weigh out the pros and cons of moving a piece ( pun intended) Furniture is rather bulky and heavy, and oftentimes it’s cheaper to leave old furniture behind and buy new furniture, than haul your pieces thousands of miles across the country. Arrange to have new items shipped to your new home by the seller.  If you have specialty items, such as a piano, pool table, or hot tub, these items will require special packing and handling by a professional moving company.

Hire professional movers!

The best way to move from one state to another is to hire professional movers. At Beltway, our long distance moves are handled much like our local moves, you’ll get our undivided concierge attention from beginning to end.

Stick to a packing timeline.

The last thing you want to be doing on moving day is still be packing! Moving out of state is all about being ready for the day of the move. That’s why it’s important to follow a good packing timeline. Create a checklist and a timeline of what you want packed by a specific date, and you’ll be ready for moving day.

Long distance moves can be stressful, but the right preparation can put your mind at ease. Quick Tip: Be sure to transfer your utilities and services to your new address. Most utilities let you sign up for service or change your existing service online!

Once you get acclimated to your new environment and have fully unpacked, it’s time to explore your new home! Consider signing up for Meetup, a platform used to meet new people, learn new things, and explore new cities.

Top Rated, Highly Recommended

Bill was excellent in both estimating and explaining the move, which entailed working with multiple people and delivery points. Follow up from the office was very professional, questions and concerns were answered promptly, and paperwork was thorough and easy to understand. Beltway is clearly a team operation, and a winning one at that. I would absolutely use Beltway again, and especially commend Caesar, Rene, and crew. I chose Beltway based on the promises made, and from start to finish, they did everything they said they would, and more. The team clearly understands the moving process from both a psychological and logistical standpoint
